Circle of life

Good day to you. It is very sunny here 25c. Rosie and I  have been too Montrose golf course. She walks very well on her lead , she follows me. Today she has managed her business outside.  I have new strategies to out weigh her eating stones. Whenever I take her out to do business if nothing done exactly when I take her out. I bring her back indoors keeping her up in my arms then try again until she is ready. Been 2 walks today going out again 3pm Only walk 20mins each time. Golf course is 5 mins away. Beach 10min walk. She is home sprawled out on floor in sunshine.  It feels good to be walking a dog again. Memories of my beautiful cocker spaniel Carrie come back big time. I miss her very much, I feel tears whenever I think of her, wishing she was still here to feel the sunshine too. I feel very sad at times knowing she walked these parts too. She was my lifeline towards my healing after losing my son. Now Rosie helps me get over losing my Cocker spaniel Carrie.  Circ...

Very first walk jack Russell puppy

Image
Today Rosie went for her very first walk outside our garden. She did very well,  not pulling on her lead. She has small problems which shall vanish through training also age. She is after all still a little puppy. Socializing her to noises which she has only heard from afar. She was frightened by the close car engines also hedge trimmers. Other than this she still walked very well with a little coaxing. She tries to each stones and grass or weeds. I shall have to use a muzzel when outside to stop this. It is to dangerous to allow her to swallow stones. Her toilet training is coming along, she managed to do business outside twice today. Now when it happens on training pad she stands and waits for all her praises. When it doesn't happen like it does outside,  she walks away with her tail between her legs. She has settled into a routine. Mornings begin at 7am with business outside or indoors.  Then she goes back to bed to sleep until 8am. This is when she spends a little tim...

Puppy massage after zoomie

Image
Owning a puppy.  Yes they are so cute , in reality, hard work and exhausting.  From early morning to around 6pm you are very much under their attention.  Getting the balance right is not always spot on. If you over interact with a puppy it becomes very difficult to keep their excitement under control.  I put all toys away at 6pm and do mostly training basic skills. Also calming puppy down for to unwind for the day. If she takes a zoomie I sit in MIDDLE of floor and do absolutely nothing.  I allow her to run off her energy giving her no attention at all. I have to be able to react quickly for she shall sometimes test me by jumping up to my face. This is where I say nothing but put out my two hands flat to protect myself against her teeth, sharp claws and bumping my nose with her head. Learnt from experience I may add, ouch. Once she can see there is nothing happening around her. After about 10mins of zoomie she finally comes to sit in front of me. I leave her a f...

Stop puppy eating grass

Image
Teaching Rosie my Jack Russell puppy not to eat grass when she goes outdoors.  Is this possible you may ask. Well I am hoping so, I shall try my best for if a blade of grass belongs lodged in her throat she would need an operation to remove it, an expensive playtime.  So it is best to get your puppy use to the words leave it. I am doing this with many items inside my home which I find dangerous to her. Although all put out of harms way, it is still best she knows her boundaries.  Today I began with filling a small amount of grass into a poo bag. I bring the grass indoors and sprinkle it on my floor. Keeping a very close eye on her. You need quick reactions with a Puppy especially a Jack Russell.  I lay some grass down in front of her, when she make a move towards it with her mouth.  I say leave it putting my hand flat out close to her nose. This stops her in her track. Once she backs away I give her a tasty treat. This has to be done every day until you go outsi...

Puppy is priority

Image
Rosie is knawing her night crate. It is a proper puppy crate the smallest on the market. Made of metal. The problem she has is her tiny teeth can grip between the thin bars at bottom of her crate. This may cause them to get stuck especially if she twists her head suddenly to tug as she often does when she is chewing. If she does this it is inevitable she shall damage her teeth. I have tried placing thicker blankets. Also a large dog bed with high sides. She only pushes these down with her body to reach the metal bars. I am using her crate to keep her in a puppy friendly environment away from fire. Where she can squeeze into the smallest holes. Where she can get stuck. She is growing fast ,I do hope her adult teeth push through her gums to become stronger. She gets ice and marrow bones to chew on. The ice helps her gums cool down enough to stop her. It is an ongoing process which has to be supervised just like babies in human form do. Containing her inside her crate only...

Lets talk about puppy panic

Image
Talk about panic omg. My miniature jack Russell puppy is so tiny she gets into the smallest places. Tonight she managed to squeeze herself in between the bookcase and fireplace. I never have fire on thank goodness. She tried to turn to get herself back out bringing the bookcase shelve with her, thus trapping her leg. I tried so hard to free her. I could not so as I have a panic disorder that is what I did. My scream is like psycho film, its so loud it stopped my puppy wriggling to get out. I screamed on my husband who was upstairs resting. He came running downstairs his heart pounding hearing my screams. You think he be use to them by now. For I have had many encounters with panic situations one being attacked by 4 large dogs who ripped my beautiful late cocker spaniel Carrie like a rabbit. I screamed that day too. My husband managed to free our puppy from her ordeal. She had stopped squealing on hearing mine. So guess my scream helped her. He got her loose, she is relu...

Moving crate further away

Image
Rosie goes for her second injection next week. Then she can go outside and explore. She loves to crunch at tiny stones so having to never take my eyes off her. Her routine is getting adjusted slowly, she tends to want to stay awake from 5.20am. At this time I do not allow her to engage with me at all. I place her back into her bed. When I know she has already done her business I then do not allow her to come out her bed again.  She does try, when this happens I point my finger at her saying No. She then lays down with her head on her paws looking at me. I pretend I am asleep.  Eventually she does also, this takes her to 7.30am a more realistic time to begin her day. I do not feed her I allow her to wait until I have prepared breakfast for the family. 8am Rosie gets her morning meal. Today I moved her crate out of sight from me. Tonight ought to be fun and games then, hmm. I am teaching her not to see me each time she wakens. If she decides to lay at my bed I shall keep putting...

Decided to get another pet after loss.

How does it feel owning a new puppy after losing my beautiful companion of 12yrs. My beautiful cocker spaniel Carrie.  I feel a bag of mixed emotions,  from guilt too happiness.  Sad too that my beautiful Carrie is no longer here to share in the fun of having a new puppy running around the house. I get very emotional whenever thoughts of my little cocker come into my mind. When this happens when I am holding my little Jack Russell  Rosie, I let her know it is not her making me feel sad. I hold her close and speak softly into her ears, close to my face. She looks at me as if she is listening to every word I tell her. A bag of mixed emotions which is held inside a lucky dip. I have no idea which emotions shall arise each day. They get picked out of the blue , triggered by whatever is going on in my day. I often find myself comparing my new puppy to how my beautiful cocker spaniel acted when I was training her. Yet it is impossible to do. Two completely different breeds...
